All you need to know about anemia

Anemia is a type of disease that is caused due to decreased number of circulating red blood cells in our body. Most of the people are affected by this problem. It is said that 24.8% of the world’s population is affected by anemia. There has been found about 4oo types of anemia till date. This disease not only affects humans but also cats and dogs. There are many symptoms through which we can find the severity of this disease. Anemia is a condition when the body lacks enough number of blood cells or haemoglobin. Sometimes anemia may be hereditary and mostly infants are affected by this from the time of birth. Women are mostly affected because of the blood loss during menstruation and during delivery.

What are the causes?

Anemia is said to occur due to many reasons. Our body needs red blood cells to survive. Some conditions may lead to low level of blood cells. Anemia is caused by three main factors such as blood loss, decreased blood cells and destruction of them. It is explained in detail as below.

  • Blood loss

The most common type is iron deficiency caused by shortage of iron resulting in loss of blood. When there is a blood loss it leads to all severe blood loss. Anemia due to blood loss may be caused by haemorrhoids, usage of drugs and menstrual problems.

  • Decreased blood cells

Anemia is also caused by decreased blood cells. When diseases affect the bone marrow, it would reduce the production of blood cells thus leading to anemia.

  • Destruction of blood cells

Red blood cells have a lifespan of 120 days. The immune system affects the blood cells sometimes and so they are destructed. This would cause loss of blood cells leading to anemia.

Symptoms of Anemia

There are many symptoms for knowing whether a person is affected by anemia. Most common symptom would be fatigue and lack of energy. The person who is anaemic will always feel very tired and drowsy. It would tend them to always stay idle. Here are the other symptoms.

  • Paleness of skin

  • Fast heartbeat

  • Shortness of breath

  • Chest pain

  • Headache

Anemia can be diagnosed by common blood test common blood count. A CBC would give the person’s overall health condition. So using this test it can be determined whether the person is affected by anemia.

How anemia is treated?

There is range of treatments for anemia that increases the blood cells. The treatment will depend on the type and cause of anemia. If it is due to iron deficiency, then intake of iron supplements is advised. If it is due to vitamin deficiency then the dietary supplements are the treatment. When the anemia is caused due to nutritional deficiencies, then an iron rich diet would help get rid of it. The intake of foods can be cereals, pulses, leafy vegetables, nuts, brown rice, and dry fruits. By having a proper intake of healthy foods this disease can be completely avoided and you can have a healthy body.
